Clean technology affects almost every industry. It’s as broad as it is deep. In Indianapolis, we’re developing a focus on clean technology expertise in two key areas: energy and automotive.
Energy Generation.
Indianapolis is home to a growing, number of manufacturing companies that produce components integral to alternative energy production, particularly wind energy. Many engineering firms are involved in incorporating clean tech into the construction and operations of buildings as well.
Efficiency.
Companies are taking advantage of another new energy development: IT applications for more efficient use of electricity. Energy auditors and monitors are helping businesses find ways to lower their energy usage and control costs. With large manufacturing facilities, multiple higher education campuses and several hospitals, there are many opportunities for energy-efficiency technology companies to help businesses operate smarter and use less energy.
Infrastructure.
From Project Plug-IN – one of the first national infrastructures for plug-in stations for hybrid vehicles – to building smart grids and other advancements, Indianapolis is starting to build a solid infrastructure that provides more readily available access to renewable energy.
Automotive Hybrids.
A pioneer of the electric power train, Indiana’s industry now spans the entire electric/hybrid/plug-in vehicle production chain, with established and emerging companies focused on engines and electric motors, power electronics, energy storage, advanced chassis and overall systems integration.
Renewable batteries.
Indiana companies have developed some of the most notable advancements in energy storage and battery technology systems, and today, our region is widely associated with the production of renewable batteries and technologies innovatively storing and mediating battery energy.
Renewable fuels.
Alternative fuel production is a natural outgrowth of Indiana’s strong agricultural industry. As one of the largest corn and soybean states, Indiana has 20+ biofuel plants with a combined one billion gallons of capacity, including the world’s largest biodiesel plant.
